Born and raised in Golden, Colorado, Warren has worked in dental sales since 1977. His experience led to his specializing in dental rotary instruments. In 2007, Warren was named the COO of Sales and Marketing for KOMET USA. With its US headquarters in Rock Hill, South Carolina, KOMET is one of the fastest growing manufacturers of dental rotary instruments in the U.S. market. When he's not marketing rotary instruments, Warren spends time with his wife, Donna, their two daughters and three grandchildren on their horse farm in Rock Hill. PinkTooth.net got a chance to speak with Warren this month about an innovative new product KOMET USA is launching. Please tell me a little about KOMET USA.

KOMET is a worldwide leader of rotary dental instruments made from titanium, diamond, tungsten carbide and steel. We manufacture our rotary instruments at our headquarters in Lemgo, Germany. For more than 80 years, the KOMET brand has delivered innovation and quality to the dental industry. Our complete line of dental rotary instruments, systems and services has been sold in the United States for almost 3 years under the name KOMET USA. Our US headquarters is located in Rock Hill, SC.

Tell me about selling direct rather than selling through a dealer?

KOMET USA does not sell through a dealer network-saving dentists and laboratories time and money. Practitioners work directly with our sales and support staff. Each advisor is an expert in our technology and how our instruments can help a practice or laboratory. We have the ability to ship all orders directly from Germany via FedEx within 48 hours after they are placed without having any back orders.

How important is innovation to KOMET?

Prior to launching any rotary instruments, all KOMET products undergo extensive tests and measurements in its R&D laboratories. These highly specialized instruments empower practitioners to solve problems and facilitate new techniques and methods of treatment. Plus, we have a lot of key opinion leaders here in the U.S. beta test our products, just like our friend Dr. Lori Trost. That's how we came to launch the OS Discs and OS30 Electric Handpiece this month.

Tell me about the OS Discs.

It's the first of its kind in dentistry designed for both cosmetic dentistry and orthodontic procedures. The OS (oscillating segment) Discs are safe and efficient for interproximal enamel reduction. The OS Discs are more effective than manual enamel reduction with lower risk of injuring the soft tissue. The OS Discs allow enough vision for the user without the need of a disc guard and provide optimal chip removal.

How do the OS Discs work?

OS Discs are 60-degree segmented with a radius of only 1.4 cm and a pivoting angle of 30 degrees, allowing access into tight spaces with excellent user control. The OS Discs allow the user to correct minor tooth-size discrepancies, eliminate crowding, allowing tooth movement, broaden interproximal contact areas, and improve orthodontic outcomes such as Invisalign® (Align Technology, Inc) procedures. There are 15 different OS Discs â€“ nine with fine-grit diamonds and six with medium-grit diamonds. Out of the 15 OS Discs, eight are one-sided and seven are two-sided, and come in various thicknesses (0.13 mm to 0.45 mm). OS Discs also allow the user to eliminate crowding and reduce enamel for the proper placement of veneers.

Can you use the OS Discs in any handpiece?

The OS Discs were designed to be used in KOMET's oscillating electric handpiece OS30. When using the micro-motor at full capacity, an effective performance of 5,000 oscillations per minute is reached. It is also possible to use the OS30 in an air motor; and at the motor's maximum capacity, an effective performance of 2,500 oscillations per minutes can be reached. Before any interproximal reduction procedure, we suggest the interdental contact be eliminated with a honeycomb-designed diamond strip. Afterwards, the user must guide the OS Discs from the occlusal side through the contact point in a slow, but continuous movement for maximum efficiency.
